Volunteer tutors work individually with an adult learner whose goal is to improve reading skills or learn English. Tutor and student meet once a week for two hours. The Dominican Literacy Center provides materials and support to assist tutors and students in the learning process. Your schedule is based on your availability. This is a great opportunity to have a direct impact on someone' life and to serve adults who are trying to improve their lives and economic situation.
If you can read you can tutor. The Center does not require previous teaching or tutoring experience. A volunteer may begin tutoring after attending a Tutor Orientation meeting. By attending the required Tutor Training Workshop in February, May or October a tutor is granted certification in the Laubach method. Tutors must be eighteen or older.
