In August, 1989, the Dominican Literacy Center first opened its doors. The beginning held risk and uncertainty, as staff members canvassed the Detroit eastside area with flyers announcing the official opening of the Center.
The site began with three staff members and five tutors. However, by mid-September 1989, the increase in student requests was so great that additional tutors/volunteers were quickly sought from the community at large.
