Our next Tutor Training Workshop is May 18-19. There is still time to volunteer and be trained as a DLC tutor. Call 313-267-1000.
Adults who want to learn basic reading, writing, spelling, math or beginning computer skills, come to The Dominican Literacy Center. One-to-one tutoring is offered. Students set goals including: employment, college, reading improvement, English language, self-confidence or managing day-to-day life. Services are free; students pay for books.
Volunteer tutors attend an intensive workshop at the Dominican Literacy Center and are certified. They are matched with an adult learner whose interests and schedule are compatible. Tutoring is offered on site at the Dominican Literacy Center Monday through Thursday, 8 A.M. to 8 P.M., Friday and Saturday 9 A.M. to 4 P.M. Tutors give two hours a week to students.
Besides tutoring, volunteers help with mailings, phone calls, flyer distribution, computer data entry, social events and publicity. Others tell an adult about the Center or offer to accompany a learner to the Center. Many support the Dominican Literacy Center financially or remember us in the future.
